Grand Master’s Palace Special Opening on Boxing Day
Being at sea level, the site is subject to flooding and though there have been attempts to drain the area for agriculture, seasonal flooding, brackish groundwater and exposure to salt-laden grigal gales, rendered it unusable. Reverted to the wild, a dense thicket of tamarisk formed, to which an olive grove was later added.
Experience the rich history of the Palace as you explore the famous hallways decorated with armoured knights. Throughout the day, the Grand Master’s Palace will be vigilantly guarded by the active soldiers of the Inguardia Parade, who will showcase their abilities through a variety of performances. Moreover, animated tours will be offered in both Maltese and English, with the Maltese one starting at 10:15 and the English one starting at 11:45.
‘The Crib’s Journey with St Francis’ exhibition, which is currently open at the palace, will take visitors back in time to the twisting pathways, garigue terrain, flickering lamps and modest rocky cottages of the millennium-old nativity scene. And, to finish it off, visit the Orangerie, where you can indulge your senses with the rich flavours of traditional seasonal drinks and pastries.
If you’re a history buff, consider visiting the Heritage Malta membership one-stop-shop to obtain your very own membership card and begin reaping even greater benefits from your research into our local history. Seniors and students will also be able to pick up their passports for Heritage Malta. As a memento of the occasion, you can buy exclusive Heritage Malta products from the gift stores.
During this event, the public will also have access to the President’s Office. A €2 entry price will be collected at the door, and contribution boxes will be available for those who are feeling into the spirit of giving this holiday season. All proceeds will be donated to the Malta Community Chest Fund.
Furthermore, the palace will open tonight and remain open until January 7. It will then close again from January 8 to January 12, after which it will open continuously from January 13 onwards.
