ŻfinDays back with 6 shows this February

This February, ŻfinMalta National Dance Company is inviting the public to  ŻfinDays 2024, “a celebration of contemporary dance”. The event consists of 6 shows held at the Valletta Campus Theatre, where trained dancers will perform ‘Cantata’ by Mauro Bigonzetti & ‘Aringa Rossa .10’ by Ambra Senatore.

CANTATA BY MAURO BIGONZETTI

Firstly, ‘Cantata’ is a work by the unique Mauro Bigonzetti, a highly esteemed dancer and choreographer from Italy. Sei in Movimento, his debut piece, was shown in 1990. He joined Aterballetto in 1997 and served as its principal choreographer and artistic director until the end of 2007. Since then, he has created dances for groups all around the world, such as the English National Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Staatsballet Berlin, Ballet del Teatro Argentino, Ballet du Capitole de Toulouse, and Ballet del Teatro Argentino. ‘Cantata’ is an intuitive dance with evident Mediterranean origins.

ARRINGA ROSSA .10 BY AMBRA SENATORE

This year, choreographer Ambra Senatore will once again be partnering with ŻfinMalta to interpret ‘Aringa Rossa’, which was originally developed as a full-length piece in 2014. Since 2016, Senatore has served as the National Choreographic Center’s director in Nantes. Similar to Bigonzetti, she moves back and forth till the dance takes on a dramatic quality. “Aringa Rossa’ is an open dance with several continuously moving parts coming together like a puzzle, pushing Senatore’s compositional technique to the limit. Created in collaboration with assistant choreographer Vincent Blanc, this adaptation of ‘Aringa Rossa.10’ will provide an interesting blend between the dancers’ individualities and the ten-year-old original choreography.

ŻfinDays 2024 is supported by the Embassy of France in Malta, and the Italian Cultural Institute of Valletta. The dates are February 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, and 25, with all the shows starting at 7.30 pm. Tickets can be purchased online here, and anyone is free to attend the Open Rehearsals on January 20 (‘Cantata’) and February 3 (‘Arringa Rossa’)!
