This Friday, on January 12, Sylvana Debono will be launching her debut exhibition ‘De Novo’ at Gemelli Art Gallery in Ta’ Qali.
Although not brand-new to the public eye, this is Debono’s first artistic endeavour as a mixed-media artist. Debono sees the world through a different lens; she is not only a new creative face on the scene, but she also infuses the contemporary artistic landscape with a refreshing perspective. Under the direction of international artist Steven Christian Reed, the artist has created 33 pieces for this exhibition, which is curated by artist Ray Piscopo Debono.
De Novo challenges the limits of watercolour to create dimensions, depths, and textures that offer the artistic medium a fresh portrayal. Debono’s oeuvre encompasses oddly large paintings, some with dimensions as big as 560mmx760mm, as well as “small and intimate” pieces, which depict creatures of all sizes. As Debono delineated, her work varies in colour and subjects. Moreover, she features both the abstract and the realistic (to an extent), having been greatly influenced by the Impressionist Art Movement.
The inspiration is evident in some of the pieces she teased on her Facebook page. In ‘Arches I’, ‘Arches II’, and ‘Arches III’, she recreates the play of nature and light by combining watercolour with gold leaf and gesso. Additionally, the artist explores depth through the use of over 10 shades of green in ‘Holy of Holies’, a watercolour and ink piece.
