Free Harbour Ferry service announced for Tallinja card holders

Yesterday, Transport Malta announced a new initiative that will simultaneously boost multimodality integration, lessen traffic in the Central Harbour region, and improve air quality. To encourage environmentally friendly transportation choices and a more sustainable lifestyle, all Tallinja card holders will receive free access to the Harbour Ferry Service effective today, January 15, 2024. The Ferry Service operates between Valletta, Sliema, and the Three Cities. Simply taking the ferry allows one to get from Valletta to Sliema (and vice versa) in under 15 minutes.

This measure is a reflection of the recently implemented system now in use on buses. When boarding a ferry, holders of personalised Tallinja cards only need to tap their cards to gain free access to the harbour ferry service. Additionally, free use of the Barrakka Lift is another perk for holders of Tallinja Cards. Those who use their Tallinja cards will be given a ticket that allows them to ride the Barrakka lift for free, making travel even more convenient and affordable.

The CEO of Transport Malta, Jonathan Borg, touched on the importance of this effort; “By providing free access to the harbour ferry service for Tallinja card holders, we aim to encourage the use of public transportation, reduce the number of cars in the Harbour area, and ultimately contribute to a healthier and cleaner environment.”

Moreover, Transport Minister Chris Bonett praised the effort, saying it will help people save their money, while simultaneously contributing to a cleaner environment; “This is another measure in the promotion of sustainable means of transport, and more such schemes are planned for the future,” he said.

From now on, those who possess a personalised Tallinja card can simply get around using the ferry rather than a crowded bus. Visit here to learn how tourists can get their own Tallinja cards, and what your best options are.
