5th edition of Gozo’s Kantamagħna at Astra Theatre this Saturday
This Saturday, January 20, marks the 5th instalment of Kantamagħna – A Singers’ Festival. Presented by DCapitals Big Band, this Gozo event will be held at Victoria’s Astra Theatre.
Kantamagħna (“Sing with us”) is a yearly singing competition that platforms up and coming local talent, with participants who are just oozing both skill and charm! The contestants, ranging in age from 10 to 35, were narrowed down to 24 people last November, when they were chosen through live auditions. These finalists will compete in three separate categories according to age; Category A is for ages 10-13, Category B is for ages 14-17, and Category offers a much wider range of 18-35.
Here are this year’s singers: In Category A, it’s Faith Buttigieg, Thomas Casha, Emma Farrugia, Aaliyah Grech, Eleny Incorvaja Scerri, Kristy Said, Nyann Vella, and Anneka Xerri. Next, Category B features Benjamin Attard, Mychael Bartolo Chircop, Krista Chircop, Riona Degiorgo, Kaylyn Mallia, Krista Mercieca, Kylie Micallef, and Krista Sujak. The Category C singers have yet to be revealed, but they will be announced soon!
On Saturday, the 24 finalists will each perform with a live 18-piece band, DCapitals Big Band, under the direction of George Apap. Trophies will be awarded to winners in each category, as well as runners-up. A one-year contract with the band will be given to the overall winner, who will get to perform with the band both locally and internationally. To get to know the contestants further and stay updated, visit the band’s official page here.
Entrance for Kantamagħna is entirely free and open to the public, although seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. It all begins at 7.30 pm. For those who can’t make it, the concert will be broadcasted live on TVM! Kantamagħna is supported by the Ministry for Gozo through the Cultural Fund Scheme, as well as Distinct Homes Ltd.
