five outdoor activities in gozGozo’s ‘Il-Ħaġar’ Museum to debut collective exhibition ‘Unknown Prescription’

On Saturday, January 27, the ‘Il-Ħaġar’ Museum and Community Cultural Centre in Victoria’s St George’s Square is debuting a special collective exhibition.

The capital city of Gozo, Victoria (Rabat), is home to the Il-Ħaġar | Heart of Gozo Museum and Cultural Centre. It was founded with the aim to give visitors a genuine understanding of the intersection of Christian culture and Gozitan heritage that define this island community. Through the beliefs, skills, and products of its people, Il-Ħaġar narrates the history of this island.

The Museum and Cultural Centre officially opened about a decade ago, in 2013. It is closely associated with St. George’s Parish Basilica, known as the golden church of Gozo, and houses its significant artistic and historic patrimony. The Centre actively plans such events for its yearly programme, including historic exhibitions, fascinating talks, and educational events.

Furthermore, the centre has its own temporary exhibition area, where ‘Unknown Prescriptions’ will be inaugurated on January 27. Curated by Austin Camilleri, the exhibition features works by Mario Abela, Justin Falzon, and Charles Balzan. Thematically, it delves into concepts of fragmentation, transition, and the flesh, with paintings and photography engaging in a “dialogue with artefacts” drawn from Il-Ħaġar’s permanent collection.

A special catalogue is being produced for the exhibition, which will include essays by Austin Camilleri, Maria Frendo, Niki Young, and Gabriel Zammit. It will be formally launched three weeks after the exhibition opens, on February 17. In addition to the exhibition, Il-Ħaġar offers visitors several audio-visual rooms, and a recently renovated rooftop terrace bar with breathtaking views of St George’s Basilica, the Castello and Victoria skyline, and the rural Gozo landscape.

‘Unknown Prescription’ will remain open until April 14, during the centre’s regular opening hours; all days of the week from 9 am to 5 pm. Entrance is free of charge.
