Journey into the world of Sound Design at the Valletta Design Cluster

Next Wednesday, November 24, will kick off the Valletta Design Cluster’s Fifty Six Design Talks for the year 2024! Prepare for an evening of design and exchange, as speakers Aidan Somers and Christian Heinrichs delve into the fusion between art  and technology in ‘Sonic Alchemy’.

FiftySix is an intriguing series of talks that explore the many aspects of design. The monthly event is a collaboration between the Valletta Design Cluster and Golden Glitch. The sessions always take place on a Wednesday at dusk, led by two distinct guest speakers who are knowledgeable in their field each time. Both speakers must give their theme-specific presentations within 14 minutes, followed by a 14-minute Q&A session of equal length, amounting to a total of 56 minutes – hence the name FiftySix Design Talks.

The previous session focused on the art of ‘bizilla’, or lace-making. This time, they’ll be shifting the focus to a somewhat subversive interpretation of the word ‘design’: Sound Design. Next week, musical experts Aidan Somers and Christian Heinrichs will take attendees on a journey through the continually evolving auditory world.

Aidan Somers

Aidan Somers, also known by electronic alter ego Alias 1, uses sound as a medium for storytelling. His music possesses the ability to captivate the listener’s imagination, from the “tranquil depths of ambient” to the “pulsing rhythms of electronica”. As the creator of AISO Records, Aidan uses his music production expertise to support emerging musicians, influencing the future direction of sound in the process.

Christian Heinrichs

Next is Christian Heinrichs, a sound designer who strikes a perfect balance between technology and art. His inventive soundscapes have touched millions of people on platforms ranging from the American broadcasting channel Adult Swim to Google Arts & Culture. With a focus on interactive audio systems spanning multiple genres such as web interfaces, virtual reality, digital instruments, and even the ambient sounds of electric vehicles, Christian’s talk promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking journey through sound design.

After the presentations, guests will be able to network and mingle with other designers of various backgrounds over a complimentary glass of wine. So, mark your calendar for January 24 at 6.30 pm for an evening that promises to redefine the way you experience sound – and make a run for it when you start to see the sun set. The event is free of charge, although seating is limited so those interested will need to reserve a spot here.
