The Malta Maritime Museum reopens its doors for exhibition

The Malta Maritime Museum covers 7000 years of Malta’s nautical history from prehistory to the present. Located in the Old Naval Bakery, it is a must-see when taking a stroll along the picturesque Birgu waterfront. On February 9, the museum will be reopening the doors after closing for renovation, for an exhibition entitled ‘An Island at the Crossroads’.

Being that it is a small island nation, Malta’s future has been at the mercy of the seas that crash on its coast for generations. What was once its greatest natural barrier has become a bridge as its people have travelled so far beyond, while also allowing both good and bad to enter, resulting in the creation of “An Island at the Crossroads.” The exhibition is an attempt to take a closer look and discover the true nature of this island nation.

Exploring Malta’s geographically strategic location in the Mediterranean, ‘An Island at the Crossroads’ unveils a tapestry of stories created by the sea’s influence on the island nation and its character. The artefacts on display, which range from ex-voto artwork to vintage nautical instruments, narrate a gripping tale of love, strife, and the challenges faced by those who ventured across the ocean to begin anew.

Starting on February 9, 2024, this exhibition will be open every day (except Tuesday) from 9 am to 5 pm until. The museum itself is still closed for the time being. Tickets will be available for purchase later on from Heritage Malta’s website. ‘An Island at the Crossroads’ will remain open until February 9, 2025.

This is merely the beginning, as a whole year’s worth of events is planned. These including conferences, teaching initiatives for school-aged children, educational talks, Taste History events, and even an opportunity to spend a night at the museum.
