Celebrating Conservation: Maltese Bee Honoured on New Two-Euro Coin
Calling all numismatists! Excitement abounds in Malta as the Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Bee celebrates a significant milestone – the forthcoming introduction of the Maltese Bee on a two-euro commemorative coin! If you are a coin collector or a fan of bees, don’t miss the opportunity to get your hands on this beautiful coin!
The Central Bank of Malta has taken the commendable initiative to pay tribute to this important pollinator, a move widely praised by bee conservation advocates and enthusiasts. Expressing their joy on social media platforms like Facebook, Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Bee members conveyed their delight that the long-advocated proposal to feature the Maltese Bee on a commemorative coin is finally coming to life.
The Foundation’s primary goal is preserving the Maltese Bee population, recognising its pivotal role due to its endemic status and inherent significance. In pursuit of this objective, the Foundation actively campaigns for the designation of the Maltese Bee as Malta’s national insect. While the Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) is native to Malta, its subspecies (Apis mellifera ruttneri), known as the Maltese Honey Bee, is exclusive to the Maltese archipelago, rendering it endemic.
The commemorative coin highlights the Maltese Bee’s ecological importance and the need to safeguard and celebrate Malta’s unique biodiversity. Previous limited 2 euro coins have included heroes of the pandemic, the Maltese temples, and traditional Maltese games.
