Award-winning play by local playwright imagines humans in a dystopian future
Next week, local actor and playwright Malcolm Galea is bringing his award-winning play to Malta. ‘Plastic & Chicken Bones’ will be staged at Blue Box Theatre in Msida, from February 16 to 18.
The high-concept solo performance addresses issues like unethical technological advancements, global warming, and geopolitical conflict. In 2022, it was honoured with the Best Newcomer award at the Brighton Fringe. The play deals with the dystopian future that we as humans are condemning ourselves to if we stay on this path.
In reality, we are only destroying ourselves as we render the planet uninhabitable. Unlike humans, the world can bounce back from extinction events the way it has plenty of times before, and it will continue to spin whether or not we are here. Galea believes that all traces of human habitation will be eliminated in a few million years, “save for a thin layer of concrete, plastic, and chicken bones in the earth’s crust.”
In the play, humankind is imagined to still be around two millennia from now, and must adjust to the changes that have occurred. Future humans will undoubtedly be a lot more free, but not necessarily in the ways that we would define as such. They also wouldn’t think we were free or happy because we work our entire lives and then pass away, as Galea explained.
Described by a reviewer as ‘Brave New World meets Black Mirror’, this dystopian social commentary was made with the goal of generating discussion amongst audiences and forcing them to confront reality. The upcoming run at Blue Box Theatre is being directed by Denise Mulholland, and will include a new soundscape created by Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur.
According to Galea, the show will be put on in Brighton Fringe once again and will be used as an icebreaker to introduce their other show ‘The Trials of Magnus Coffinkey’. Following that, they will be looking to perform the play at some art and science festivals.
Plastic & Chicken Bones will be staged at Blue Box Theatre, Msida, from February 16 to 18, with each performance at 8 pm. To purchase tickets or find more information, visit bluebox.com.mt
