School Olympics Malta Project garners strength
The Maltese Olympic Academy, in collaboration with its associated Federations and Associations, along with The Centre of Physical Education & Sport within the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research (MEYR), has reaffirmed its commitment to the ‘School Olympics Malta’ initiative.
This initiative encourages middle and secondary school students to participate in intra-school competitions, tournaments, and festivals.
These events have been highly successful, driven by the national enthusiasm following Malta’s historic achievement of topping the medal standings for the first time at the Games of the Small States of Europe, hosted and organised in Malta in 2023.
Students are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to engage in their favourite sports at the school level.
The chosen age group, 11 to 13 years old, was selected because it marks a significant point in students’ athletic journey. During this time, they often need to decide whether to continue with their current sport, try a different one, or explore entirely new disciplines.
The School Olympics Malta Project has become a vital guiding force during this crucial phase, encouraging students to explore different sports.
This year, the programme has expanded to include Netball, a popular game enjoyed by both girls and boys. Additionally, the Malta Squash Association has organised engaging introductory sessions for middle school students, which have been met with enthusiasm and enjoyment.
The programme offers various disciplines such as Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Netball, Table-Tennis, Chess, Cross-Country, and Squash. In the coming months, additional events are planned, including Athletics – Track & Field Meet, Sailing, and Water polo.
To increase excitement, final competitions for all team-based games will take place during April and May 2024.
