Windy Start to July in Malta, What Tourists Need to Know
As July kicks off, Malta is experiencing strong winds across the islands. Despite these winds, the Met Office states that the UV Index will remain extremely high, maintaining a level of 9 for the rest of the week. Beachgoers and outdoor enthusiasts are strongly advised to take precautions against sun exposure.
Temperature-wise, Monday saw a peak of 34°C, with the rest of the week expected to range between 28°C and 30°C. The weather is predicted to be mainly sunny and windy throughout the period.
The Met Office attributes this unsettled weather to an area of low pressure covering Italy and the central Mediterranean. They note that while windy conditions in July are not uncommon, typically coming from the northwest, the forecast may be subject to change.
Swimmers and those planning maritime activities are strongly advised to avoid exposed areas during this period due to dangerous sea conditions. The public is urged to stay informed about the latest weather updates and adhere to any warnings or advisories issued by the authorities.
This weather event comes just a year after Malta experienced its hottest July on record, with a mean air temperature of 29.6°C in 2023.
Beach Safety and Red Cross Warnings
The Malta Red Cross has appealed to the public not to swim in rough seas, as this morning, the Maltese islands are hit by strong winds, which may pose a danger to swimmers. In an update on Facebook, the Malta Red Cross said that because of the wind, no one should swim (Double red flag warning) in Ġnejna, Għajn Tuffieħa, Perched Beach, Balluta Bay and Font Għadir. Qawra Point and Golden Bay were issued with a high-hazard single red flag warning.
On the other hand, the NGO said that the sea seems calm in Mellieħa Bay, Birżebbuġa, and Pretty Bay. The Malta Red Cross has also called on the public to follow the instructions of lifeguards and weather updates, as well as those on the condition of beaches.
This morning the Meteorological Office issued a strong wind warning. In a statement, it said that the West Northwest wind today is strong over exposed areas of the Maltese islands. The warning remains in effect until noon. Strong winds are expected until Thursday.
