Celebrate the balmy summer nights with MADC’s spectacular production of William Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant of Venice, masterfully directed by Stephen Oliver. This enchanting open-air performance will grace the beautiful surroundings of San Anton Gardens from 19-22 and 24-28 July 2024, beginning at 8:30 pm.

For decades, MADC has delighted audiences with its annual tradition of open-air Shakespeare, a beloved highlight of Malta’s vibrant cultural calendar. The company’s uncanny ability to transform San Anton Gardens into a captivating outdoor theatre is nothing short of magical.

The Merchant of Venice stands as Shakespeare at his most daring and dynamic—an intoxicating blend of comedy and romance, darkness and subversion, fantasy and raw human emotion. The story follows the venturesome merchant Antonio, who secures a loan from the notorious moneylender Shylock to help his friend Bassanio woo the enchanting and affluent Portia. The catch? If Antonio fails to repay the debt by the agreed date, he must forfeit a pound of his own flesh.

This riveting production, directed by and starring MADC’s artistic director Stephen Oliver as Shylock, also showcases the talents of Edward Caruana Galizia, Julia Camilleri, Gianluca Mifsud, and an impressive ensemble cast. Set in full period costume designed by the gifted Nicole Cuschieri, the visual splendour of the play is as compelling as its narrative.
