Over 200,000 Travellers Expected to Flood Malta Airport This Week

Malta International Airport braces for a surge as 216,922 travellers are expected during Santa Maria week, with July 2024 setting new records as the busiest month in the airport’s history.

As the Santa Maria public holiday weekend approaches on 15 August, Malta International Airport is bracing for a travel surge of epic proportions.

With the busiest travel days predicted to be the 15, 22, and 29 August, the airport is gearing up to welcome over 33,700 passengers on each of these peak days. Between the 12 and 18 August alone, a staggering 216,922 travellers are expected to pass through Malta’s gates.

In light of the anticipated passenger influx, the airport has a few savvy tips to help jet-setters navigate the hustle and bustle:

Be Punctual, Not Early: Arriving fashionably on time, just two hours before your flight, will do the trick—no need for an extended airport lounge hangout.

Check-In Like a Pro: If your airline offers online check-in, take advantage! With your boarding pass ready on your mobile, you can skip straight to security screening.

Pack Smart, Travel Smart: Ensure all liquids, gels, and aerosols in your carry-on are 100ml or less and packed in a clear, resealable bag. This will fast-track you through security.

Stay in the Know: Keep your eyes on the flight information display screens around the airport and check Malta International Airport’s official website for real-time flight updates and gate info.

Record-Breaking July
Malta International Airport shattered records in July, with a whopping 951,861 passengers passing through—an impressive 12.2% increase from the previous year. This milestone also crowned July 2024 as the busiest month in the airport’s history, marking the first time over 900,000 passenger movements were recorded.

Accompanying this surge was a 14.1% rise in aircraft movements, totalling 6,054 flights. The busiest day? Thursday, 25 July, when the airport buzzed with 214 flights. With seat capacity up by 11.5%, an impressive 89.7% of available seats were filled, proving that travel demand is soaring this summer.

Italy reigned supreme as Malta International Airport’s top market, grabbing 25.5% of the share, followed by the UK, France, Germany, and Poland.
