Powerful Solo Performances Light Up the Stage This September
Chewing Productions is set to present 1X1 | A Collection of New Monologues from 27 to 29 September 2024 at Theatre Next Door. Featuring powerful solo performances, the show explores themes of identity, climate change, and social media.
For its third edition of new theatre anthologies, Chewing Productions is set to present 1X1 | A Collection of New Monologues—a dynamic blend of comedy and drama featuring four captivating solo performances:
Friġġ, 90 Sekonda, Anti Social, and Moving Boxes. With a mix of Maltese and English, this powerful lineup explores themes like social media, climate change, identity, and body image, all delivered by talented local theatre practitioners.
Friġġ, written by Lara Agius and performed by Audrey Rose Mizzi, introduces us to Rosemary, who’s got diets, her mother’s nagging, and her best friend’s surprises on her mind—but more than anything, she’s got hunger. In this sharp commentary on body image and societal pressures, food is everything, but satisfaction seems just out of reach.
90 Sekonda, by Benjamin Abela and performed by Miguel Formosa, tackles the climate crisis with a satirical twist. From fast cars to plastic straws, this character is determined to live life large—even if it means speeding up the planet’s destruction. Hilarious yet thought-provoking, it’s a race against time with a dangerously reckless driver at the wheel.
Anti Social, written by Julia Camilleri and performed by Zofia Stelmaszczyk, follows Ella, a sarcastic 20-something who’s retreated into her apartment after quitting her job. With only her lifestyle podcast and a legion of online followers for company, she struggles to face the real world, grief, and her own deep-seated guilt. Can she talk herself into healing, or is she already too far gone?
Moving Boxes, by Nicky Gambin and Martina Zammit, performed by Sara Gauci, highlights Sami’s journey of packing up her life, while grappling with the world’s tendency to put people into neat little categories. But Sami isn’t one for boxes, and her story is about breaking free of them—no matter how tightly they’re packed.
All performances will feature surtitles in English, and recommended viewing is for audiences aged 16+ due to mature content. The venue is wheelchair accessible, making this a night of theatre that everyone can enjoy.
