Gozo’s First International Puppet Festival Taking Place This Weekend
This weekend, the peaceful village of Għarb in Gozo will burst to life as it hosts the island’s first-ever International Puppet Festival.
On 28 and 29 September, this exciting event will see towering puppets roaming the streets, captivating performances, and interactive workshops, offering endless entertainment for all ages. With its blend of imagination and artistry, the festival promises to bring stories to life in enchanting new ways.
The highlight of the festival? Three gigantic puppets lovingly handcrafted by the talented French theatre company Paris Bénarès. These incredible creations stand as tall as three metres and stretch six metres long and will parade through the streets with amazingly lifelike movements!
First up is Oisôh, a mischievous long-necked bird with wide-spread wings, guaranteed to steal the show with his cheeky grin. He’ll be teasing his puppeteers and might even nibble on a flower or two as he struts through the village.
Following him is an elegant, proud camel, recently freed from a crate and ready to explore. He dreams of exotic adventures, soaking up the sights and sounds of Għarb while captivating everyone he passes. And don’t forget the magnificent Sacred Cows, standing tall and richly decorated, blinking their long-lashed eyes and strolling so gracefully you’ll almost believe they’re real. You might even get a chance to feed them as they pause to graze!
But that’s not all! Straight from Sicily, the world-renowned Opera Dei Pupi Turi Grasso will showcase its traditional marionettes, complete with intricate armour and dramatic storytelling. These legendary knights and heroes, famous for their expressive faces and detailed movements, will bring a taste of Sicilian folk theatre to the festival.
Families are in for a treat with interactive puppet shows from Maltese favourite Sean Briffa, while Theatre Anon will be dazzling the crowd with shadow puppetry and life-size puppet workshops (be sure to book ahead!). Whether you’re young or just young at heart, there’s something wonderful here for everyone.
Festival director Jean Paul Mifsud has been dreaming of this event for years, and now it’s here to amaze and inspire! So, make sure you don’t miss this incredible weekend in Gozo. Puppets, parades, music, and magic, it’s all happening in Għarb!
