Based on the bestselling book by Kristina Chetcuti and Marisa Attard, and meticulously designed by Faye Paris, this exhibition shines a spotlight on the bold, talented, and determined women who have significantly shaped Malta’s history. Running from 3rd to 10th March, the exhibition is a heartfelt tribute to the extraordinary achievements of Maltese women across the ages.

A Celebration of Women’s Empowerment

Mercury is more than just a landmark – it’s a hub for culture, innovation, and community. By hosting the Amazing Maltese Women exhibition, Mercury reaffirms its commitment to empowering women and celebrating their milestones.

Owen Bonello, Chief of Marketing and Communications at Mercury, shared, “At Mercury, we strive to create spaces that inspire and uplift. This exhibition is not only a tribute to women’s history but a call to action for an inclusive and equitable future”.

The accompanying book, Amazing Maltese Women, shortlisted for the prestigious National Book Prize and published by Merlin Publishers, is already a record-breaking bestseller, now in its second print run. Combining rich storytelling with stunning illustrations, the book and exhibition illuminate the lives of unsung heroines who have influenced Malta’s past, present, and future.

About the Book

Amazing Maltese Women is a vivid and colourful tribute to the courageous and resilient women of Malta. Through comic-style narration and breathtaking ink and watercolour illustrations, the book chronicles the lives of women who dared to follow their hearts and defy expectations. While some of the women featured are well-known, many are unsung heroes whose stories are waiting to be told.

From Clara La Spatara, a skilled blacksmith during the time of the Knights, to Mary Ellul, a World War II heroine with extraordinary strength, and Maria de Dominici, one of the world’s first female artists, the book spans generations and celebrates women who made their mark in various fields. It also covers figures such as Tina, a prehistoric Maltese woman living in an egalitarian society in Ġgantija, Gozo, to Malta’s first woman cabinet minister, Agatha Barbara. Other notable women include fashion icon Madame Manfre, Malta’s own Coco Chanel, and Daphne Caruana Galizia, the brave journalist whose fearless writing cost her life.

For those inspired by the exhibition, the Amazing Maltese Women book is available for purchase at Twinset, located in the Mercury Shopping District.

Let’s unite in honouring the legacy of these remarkable women and continue building a future where every individual can flourish.
