This summer, Malta will make its mark on the international heavy metal scene as its very own Morsrot takes the stage at the legendary Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany. Known as the world’s largest and most prestigious heavy metal festival, Wacken has been the ultimate destination for metalheads for over three decades. The band’s performance will mark a historic moment for Malta’s underground music scene, as they become the first Maltese act to perform at this iconic event.

Morsrot, an emerging powerhouse in Malta’s metal scene, earned their spot at Wacken after winning the highly competitive Malta Wacken Battle of the Bands competition, held at The Garage, one of the island’s most influential live music venues. Out of 16 talented bands, Morsrot stood out and was selected by Michael Berberian, founder of the esteemed European metal label Season of Mist, to represent Malta at the Wacken Metal Battle this July.

Formed in 2021, Morsrot’s music has continuously evolved, with their early Death Metal influences transforming into a unique and dynamic sound. Their upcoming performance at Wacken is a key milestone in their rapidly growing career, following notable appearances at events like the Farsons Beer Festival, where they shared the stage with rock legends such as K.K.’s Priest (led by former Judas Priest guitarist K.K. Downing) and Metal Church. The band is also gearing up to release their debut album later this year, which they recorded at the renowned Temple Studios in Malta.

For Morsrot, their journey to Wacken is more than just a personal victory; it’s a statement about the potential of Malta’s underground music scene. The band strongly believes that true artistic growth comes from embracing criticism, challenging norms, and rejecting complacency.

“There’s a lot of great music coming out of Malta, but we feel that sugar-coating and complacency are holding the scene back,” the band explains. “Constructive criticism drives change, and change drives growth. If we set the bar too low, we’ll never know how far we could have gone”.

Beyond their musical ambitions, Morsrot advocates for young artists to prioritise passion over the perceived safety of a traditional career. “You can lose your day job anyway—so why not take the chance to do what you love?” they urge, encouraging others to take creative risks.
