18th Edition of Gozo's Classical Music Festival Returns in April

The 18th edition of Gozo’s premier classical music festival returns in April, and will run from 5 April to 4 May, featuring an exciting line-up of international and local artists.

Gaulitana: A Festival of Music makes its much-anticipated return this April, unwrapping stories and melodies that span generations and cultures throughout Gozo. Described as “a major festival of classical music” by Musical Opinion UK, this year’s 18th edition promises to be a cultural highlight, with a diverse range of performances and events aimed at enriching Gozo’s artistic scene during the quieter months of the year.

In a special tribute, this year’s festival celebrates the life and legacy of Stephen Attard, a trailblazer in the Gozitan artistic community and a regular figure at the festival. The eclectic programme spans a wide spectrum of musical genres, from period instrument performances to contemporary pieces, and includes everything from traditional and folk music to art songs and major classical works from around the world.

The festival kicks off with a spectacular opening concert, starring soprano Nicola Said and the Gaulitanus Choir. The concert will feature works by the Vella-Attard family, culminating in the premiere of Stephen Attard’s final contribution to the music world: his revised version of Quddiesa Madonna Ta’ Pinu. Other key performances include a complete cycle of Brahms’ cello sonatas, Spanish and Italian-themed programmes, and a showcase of chamber works by the late Stephen Attard.

A highlight of the festival will be its celebration of Holy Week with a unique screening of the 1903 silent film La Vie et La Passion de Jésus Christ, accompanied by Stefano Vagnini’s live organ improvisation on Lenten hymns. Also running throughout the festival is the exhibition 19th Century Music Printing in Malta, which highlights rare music covers printed by the Brocktorff family.

In addition, Gaulitana continues to engage younger audiences with its educational programme, GAULearn, presented in schools across Gozo, encouraging creativity and fostering a love for music.

The festival will culminate in a full-scale operatic production of Verdi’s Nabucco on 3 May at Teatru tal-Opra Aurora, marking the opera’s return to local stages after a 10-year absence. The performance, directed by Enrico Castiglione and conducted by Colin Attard, features an international cast, the Gaulitanus Choir, and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, and is part of the OPERA+ Weekend, which will close the festival with a stunning finale by the Gaulitanus String Orchestra.

All festival events are free of charge and no reservations are required, except for the Nabucco opera, which can be booked through the Teatru Aurora website or their ticket helpline.
