RagusaXpress Catamaran Launches, Connecting Malta and Sicily in Under Two Hours
The long-awaited RagusaXpress catamaran service officially launched last Saturday, offering a direct connection between Malta and Marina di Ragusa in Sicily. The journey takes approximately one hour and 45 minutes.
The high-speed catamaran is capable of transporting up to 430 passengers and 21 vehicles, providing a fast and convenient travel option across the Mediterranean.
Former mayor of Ragusa, Nello Dipasquale, celebrated the milestone on social media, stating, “Finally, the long bureaucratic journey leading to the launch of this international maritime connection between our beautiful Marina di Ragusa and Malta is over!” He expressed optimism that the new route will serve as a powerful catalyst for regional growth, boosting tourism and promoting broader economic development across Ragusa and surrounding areas.
The initiative follows the acquisition of the Marina di Ragusa tourist port by a consortium of investors led by Maltese businessman Paul Gauci. Located in southeastern Sicily, the port was originally developed by Tecnis, an Italian consortium that was granted a 60-year lease in 2005 and received €30 million in EU funding. Gauci, known for his role as owner of PAMA Shopping Village and co-owner of PAVI Shopping Centre, spearheaded the port’s revitalisation efforts.
RagusaXpress crossings currently operate on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The first daily departure is at 6:30 a.m., with the final return scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Service frequency is expected to increase starting 29 June.
