National War Museum Marks 50th Anniversary with Full Day of Celebrations at Fort St Elmo

On Sunday, 1 June, the National War Museum will mark its 50th anniversary with a day-long programme of free events and activities at Fort St Elmo, open to the public.

Visitors can enjoy hourly guided tours of the museum starting at 10:00, alternating between Maltese and English, and concluding at 17:00. These tours will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

One of the event’s highlights will be the reunion of the George Cross medal—a central piece in the museum’s collection—with its original accompanying letter from King George VI. The letter has been specially loaned for this occasion by the National Library of Malta.

Throughout the day, historical re-enactments by the Malta Command World War II Living History Group and the Historical Re-enactment Group of Malta will offer immersive insights into Malta’s wartime past. These performances will be enhanced by additional activities curated by Heritage Malta’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit, the Diagnostic Science Laboratories, and the agency’s Education Department.

A new immersive exhibit focusing on the Bofors Light Anti-Aircraft gun will be inaugurated during the celebrations. Weather permitting, a Piper J-3 Cub aircraft will perform a flyover of Fort St Elmo, providing a dramatic aerial display to cap off the event.

Admission to all activities and exhibitions will be free of charge.
