Maltese Comedy Star to Shave Off His Dreadlocks for Mental Health Awareness

Maltese comedy sensation Steve Hili is preparing to part ways with his iconic dreadlocks, and it’s all for a great cause. The Big Shave Off, a unique charity comedy night, is set to take place on Saturday, 14 June at Tigullio in St Julian’s, promising a wild evening of laughter, games, and one unforgettable haircut.

The event will raise funds for Kellimni.com, a platform operated by SOS Malta, which provides vital mental health services. From free individual counselling and group therapy sessions to awareness campaigns aimed at breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, Kellimni.com plays a critical role in supporting those in need across Malta.

Taking centre stage is Steve Hili, Malta’s biggest comedy export, who has promised to shave off his signature dreadlocks live on stage. The comedian, who has earned rave reviews in both the UK and Australia, will be joined by a lineup of local comedy talent including James Ryder, Ed Vassallo, Dan Xuereb, Paige Possanza, and Colin Fitz.

“This event is about more than just laughs,” Hili said. “Mental health – especially men’s mental health – is something I care deeply about. If shaving off my hair helps open more counselling slots and gets people talking, then bring on the baldness!”

Hili, the only Maltese comedian to have performed a solo show in London’s West End and at Sydney’s Comedy Store, is known for his high-energy, provocative style and until now, for his dreadlocks. “I might keep a couple at the back, just for sentimental reasons,” he joked, “but yes, it’s going.”

Graziella Schiavone from SOS Malta praised the initiative: “This is a fantastic way to get people talking about mental health. No one should feel ashamed to reach out for help. Events like this break the stigma and remind us that healing often begins with a simple conversation  and sometimes even with a laugh.”

All performers are donating their time and talent for free, with Mediacoop, Maritime MT, and Finesse Group lending their support to help make the evening a success.

Tickets are €20, with 100% of proceeds going directly to Kellimni.com.
