Looking for a unique and heartwarming experience during your Maltese getaway? Head to the southern town of Żurrieq, now proudly home to Malta’s very first public Cat Café; a serene haven for animal lovers.
Located along Triq il-Belt Valletta, this one-of-a-kind space invites both locals and tourists to unwind in the company of friendly stray cats. But it’s more than just a cute spot for feline cuddles; the café is also a dedicated sanctuary, offering feeding stations, social spaces, and post-neutering recovery facilities for rescued cats.
Launched as part of a national initiative to create more animal-friendly public spaces, the Żurrieq Cat Café reflects Malta’s growing commitment to animal welfare and eco-conscious development. Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said, who inaugurated the space alongside Public Works Secretary Omar Farrugia, called it “a key milestone in creating a more animal-aware society.”
“We’ve opened a beautiful space where visitors can spend time with these animals in a safe, calm setting,” Bugeja Said emphasized. “Projects like this play a key role in the care and protection of stray cats. It’s a step forward in building a kinder, more animal-conscious Malta.”
She also encouraged other local councils to follow Żurrieq’s lead: “We want to see more initiatives like this across the island — protecting abandoned animals should be a shared responsibility and a national priority.”
The Public Works Department undertook careful refurbishment and maintenance of the area to ensure it is welcoming for both its feline residents and the humans who care for them; from cat feeders and volunteers to curious visitors and tourists looking for something special.
Whether you’re a devoted cat lover, a supporter of animal welfare, or simply looking for a unique, feel-good stop during your trip, the Żurrieq Cat Café is a must-visit destination. It’s a warm invitation to connect, care, and create memories in one of Malta’s most charming towns.
