Discover the Malta National Aquarium in Qawra
The Malta National Aquarium is open every day from Monday to Sunday between 10:00 and 18:00 (last entry at 17:30).
The Malta National Aquarium features 52 uniquely themed tanks, showcasing a diverse array of marine and terrestrial life. From Mediterranean fish, including species native to Maltese waters, to reptiles, amphibians, insects, and carefully recreated historical artefacts submerged as they would be found around the Maltese islands, the experience is rich and immersive.
At the heart of the aquarium lies the main tank—a 12-metre-wide marvel that houses spectacular species from the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Here, visitors can encounter blacktip, zebra, leopard, and bamboo sharks, along with rays, eels, and other exotic marine life. A walk-through tunnel lets you come face-to-face with these creatures in a truly immersive setting.
Each exhibit is carefully designed to recreate authentic underwater habitats, offering not only an unforgettable visual experience but also a meaningful connection to the natural world. This attention to detail ensures that the aquarium appeals to both casual visitors and marine life enthusiasts.
Beyond the tanks, the aquarium includes essential support facilities such as a laboratory, a food preparation room, and quarantine areas that enable staff to maintain the health and wellbeing of the animals. These behind-the-scenes elements play a key role in supporting conservation, research, and education efforts.
The building itself, shaped like a starfish, has become an architectural landmark in Qawra. Its location by the sea is complemented by a nearby promenade that invites visitors to relax, take in the views, and enjoy additional amenities like a children’s play area, making the experience enjoyable for all ages.
Education is a major focus at the aquarium. In collaboration with the iLearn Biology Team, it delivers programmes aligned with Malta’s national curriculum. Students visiting the site benefit from hands-on learning experiences, while daily public talks raise awareness of pressing issues such as plastic pollution, species loss, and ocean conservation. This interactive style of education encourages critical thinking and fosters environmental responsibility.
What truly sets the Malta National Aquarium apart is its commitment to sustainability. Every aspect of its operations reflects a dedication to protecting marine life and respecting the local environment. The aquarium not only enhances the natural beauty of Qawra Point but also promotes a deeper understanding of our relationship with the sea.
