Suspension of Demolition and Excavation Works in Summer Tourist Areas
In order to minimise disruption during the peak tourism season, demolition and excavation works will be prohibited in designated touristic areas from 15 June to 30 September 2025.
This seasonal restriction is a joint initiative between the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA). It aims to reduce the inconvenience that construction activities pose to residents, visitors, and hospitality establishments during the busy summer months.
This measure is in line with Subsidiary Legislation 623.08 (Third Schedule 1c), which provides for the regulation of construction activities in sensitive areas during specified periods. The demolition and excavation phases of construction are particularly disruptive to surrounding communities, and their suspension during summer is intended to safeguard both the tourism experience and the quality of life for local residents.
Any demolition or excavation works carried out illegally during this restricted period in the identified areas can be reported to the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) by calling 138 (both in Malta and Gozo). Reports may be submitted during and outside office hours.
