Maltese Explorer Joins Mongol Rally Comeback

After a five-year hiatus, the Mongol Rally is finally back,  and among the daring teams taking on this epic adventure is ‘The Islanders’, a group of three Sardinians and one Maltese traveller determined to cross continents in a tiny Fiat Uno Fire.

Departing nearly a week ago, The Islanders are heading east on a route that will take them as far as Kazakhstan’s Oskemen region. The team, Gianluca Frongis (President, TDM 2000 Italy), Federico Gaviano (Vice President, TDM 2000 Italy), Giangi Mamusa (Secretary, TDM 2000 Italy), and Duncan Muscat (President, TDM 2000 Malta), are taking turns behind the wheel of their colourfully wrapped Fiat Uno, a car that’s hardly designed for such extremes, yet perfectly embodies the rally’s spirit of adventure.

This isn’t their first foray into overland travel. Between them, The Islanders have explored over 100 countries across six continents, navigated legendary routes like the Trans-Siberian Railway, and still have countless journeys ahead of them. With that experience, they’re well-equipped for the unpredictable challenges of the Mongol Rally.

Their participation this year carries special meaning: TDM 2000 Sardinia celebrates its 25th anniversary, while TDM 2000 Malta marks its 20th.

TDM 2000 is a dynamic network that promotes youth empowerment, active citizenship, and sustainable development across Europe and beyond. Through international projects, training programs, and cultural exchanges, TDM equips young people with the tools to drive positive change in their communities. By encouraging dialogue, solidarity, and innovation, the organisation helps foster a generation committed to sustainability and global responsibility. This Mongol Rally journey reflects the very ethos of TDM – connecting people, cultures, and causes for a better future.

To commemorate these milestones, the team decided to embark on this remarkable journey across Asia while raising funds for Cool Earth, a charity working with rainforest communities to halt deforestation and fight climate change.

They’ve already surpassed their minimum fundraising target of €1,500, but believe they can do much more with the support of the public.

“This isn’t just about getting from point A to point B. It’s about adventure, connection, and giving back to the planet,” said the team.

Of the nearly 200 teams competing in this year’s rally, Duncan Muscat stands out as the only Maltese participant. Together with his Sardinian teammates, he’s determined to prove that even the most unlikely vehicle, and team, can cross continents in pursuit of adventure and positive change.
