A Sculpture Exhibition by Antoine Farrugia at Kamra ta’ Fuq This August

In his latest solo exhibition at Kamra ta’ Fuq, celebrated Maltese sculptor Antoine Farrugia deepens his lifelong dialogue with limestone. Għamja l-Għajn explores the interplay between sensual form and primal material, offering a series of sculptural works that reveal strength through contrast, restraint, and transformation. The exhibition opens on 8 August and runs till 24 August.

In Għamja l-Għajn, his latest exhibition at Kamra ta’ Fuq, sculptor Antoine Farrugia continues his enduring exploration of Malta’s iconic globigerina limestone, formally recognised as a Global Heritage Stone Resource (GHSR). Known for his abstract and sensuous visual language, Farrugia introduces a new sculptural series that balances tension and harmony: polished, flowing forms perched on jagged, raw stone bases, unrefined blocks as they emerge straight from the Maltese ground.

The exhibition’s title, Għamja l-Għajn, evokes both concealment and revelation, a veiling of the eye, yet also an unveiling of deeper perception. This duality informs the entire body of work, where refinement confronts rawness, and instinct is tempered by discipline. For Farrugia, form is not merely aesthetic; it is expressive, intuitive, and rooted in the physical intimacy of working with stone. Each piece is a feat of technical mastery and a vessel for contemplative silence.

These new works reaffirm Farrugia’s commitment to abstraction, but they also serve as a profound homage to the very material that defines his practice. Whether perceived as meditative presences or tactile provocations, the sculptures invite the viewer into a reflective engagement with matter, perception, and transformation.

This exhibition follows a prolific period in Farrugia’s career. In 2023/2024, he completed a major commission for a leading local establishment, producing a significant body of work within a tight timeframe, demonstrating both his creative discipline and capacity for large-scale production. His work’s growing international recognition, including participation in symposia in Germany and China, further underscores his reputation as one of Malta’s foremost sculptors.

At once grounded in tradition and boldly experimental, Għamja l-Għajn is a testament to Antoine Farrugia’s ongoing evolution; his ability to draw from the timeless essence of stone while forging new emotional and sculptural terrain.
