Now’s the Time to Visit Malta, Record Growth in Tourism Shows Why
Malta continues to shine on the global tourism stage, with the latest NSO (National Statistics Office) inbound tourism figures for June 2025 confirming the success of the Malta Tourism Authority’s (MTA) long-term vision and strategy.
The data shows that tourism to the Maltese Islands is not only growing in numbers, but also in value. Expenditure by tourists visiting Malta and Gozo in June alone reached nearly €396 million, representing a remarkable 19.1% increase compared to the same period in the record-breaking year of 2024. This is almost double the rate of increase in tourist arrivals, which rose by 10.8%. Overall, in the first six months of 2025, tourism expenditure grew by 21%, surpassing €1.56 billion, while tourist arrivals increased by 13.5%.
Who’s Visiting?
The largest group of visitors were aged between 25 and 44, totalling over 661,000 tourists, followed by the 45–64 age group with 583,000. The 0–24 age group contributed 345,850 visitors, while the 65+ demographic accounted for 215,000 tourists. Interestingly, the most significant growth was registered in the 65+ category, which surged by 25.2%, pointing to Malta’s growing appeal as a destination for relaxed, culture-rich, off-peak travel.
Staying Longer, Spending More
The average stay remained steady at just under six nights. However, there was a 14.4% increase in visitors who stayed more than a week, suggesting that more travelers are choosing Malta for extended holidays and deeper exploration.
This growth aligns perfectly with the Malta Tourism Authority’s goals: encouraging visits in the winter and shoulder months, spreading tourism benefits year-round, and attracting higher-spending tourists from both traditional European markets and more distant destinations in North America, Asia, and Australia.
A Destination with Purpose
“These results confirm that Malta is on track with our strategic plan to revitalise and future-proof the tourism industry,” said Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority. “Together with our stakeholders and under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Dr Ian Borg, we’re building a sustainable tourism model that secures long-term economic value while offering an exceptional experience for every visitor.”
