Dive into History at the Xlendi Tower Open Weekend
Ever wondered what it’s like to dive into the past, literally? This 16 and 17 August, the Munxar Local Council and Heritage Malta’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit are making waves on Gozo’s southwest coast with a weekend you won’t want to miss! The iconic Xlendi Tower, standing proud over the sparkling waters of Xlendi Bay, is opening its doors for a special open weekend, and this time, you’re invited to explore above and below the surface.
Built in the 17th century, the tower has watched over Gozo’s shores for hundreds of years. Now, it’s your turn to watch from the top, with breathtaking views of the bay, and then plunge into an underwater world without even getting wet.
That’s right, this year’s event comes with a high-tech twist: a Virtual Reality dive into the Xlendi Underwater Archaeological Park and the incredible Phoenician Shipwreck. Strap on a headset and prepare to be transported back to the 7th century BC, as you explore one of the oldest shipwrecks ever discovered in the Mediterranean.
And for those who like their history with a side of reality, the tower will also feature a special display of underwater artefacts, freshly surfaced from Gozo’s rich maritime past. Amphorae, anchors, and ancient relics tell tales of seafarers, traders, and shipwrecks that span the millennia.
Just off Ras il-Wardija, the seabed is a time capsule – and thanks to the Xlendi Underwater Archaeological Park, opened in 2023 and sponsored by the Malta Airport Foundation, this incredible deep-sea site is now accessible to divers and history lovers alike.
Opening hours:
09:00–12:00 and 13:30–16:00 on both days.
Entry: FREE & no pre-booking required!
Whether you’re a history buff, a VR enthusiast, or just looking for an unforgettable weekend on Gozo, Xlendi Tower is the place to be. Come for the views, stay for the virtual shipwrecks, and leave with a whole new appreciation for the wonders hidden beneath the sea.
