‘Paganini to Piazzolla’, a Violin and Guitar Concert at Teatru Manoel This October

Maltese violinist Samuel Cutajar teams up with German/Australian guitarist Kolja Gibbs, performing as Duo Hafdar for an exciting concertPaganini to Piazzollaat Teatru Manoel on Wednesday 29 October, 2025. The evening’s programme traces an expansive musical journey, exploring the expressive possibilities of the violin and guitar across more than three centuries.   

From the refined elegance of Albinoni’s baroque Sonata to the virtuosic flair of Paganini, the recital moves through romantic lyricism and 20th-century charm before arriving at the passionate, genre-defying world of Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango. Also included are works by two Maltese composers – Carlo Fiamino and Albert Garzia.  

Samuel has performed as soloist with orchestras thanks to the European Foundation for Support of Culture. He won the Vera Kantrovich Bach Competition in 2020 after performing Bach’s complete 2nd solo sonata in A minor. Since his commencement at the Royal Academy, Samuel has been awarded a mentorship scheme with the Birmingham Royal Ballet and is now a regular player with this orchestra, a part-time position with Sinfonia Cymru and Glyndebourne Sinfonia. He has been a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra since 2020 and has also lead the Royal Academy’s orchestra, working with world class names, including Sir Simon Rattle, Antonio Pappano, Gianandrea Nosseda, Vasily Petrenko, Pekka Kuusisto and many more.  

Kolja Joseph Gibbsis a German/Australian classical guitarist who began his career in London in 2015 and has been active as a performer, arranger and teacher ever since. In 2022 he completed a Bachlor of Music with first degree honours at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance under the tutelage of Prof. Graham Anthony Devine, and he finished his Masters at Conservatorium Maastricht in the renouned class of Prof. Carlo Marchione in 2024.
