The Maltese Islands Celebrate Diving Honours in the 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards

Being at sea level, the site is subject to flooding and though there have been attempts to drain the area for agriculture, seasonal flooding, brackish groundwater and exposure to salt-laden grigal gales, rendered it unusable. Reverted to the wild, a dense thicket of tamarisk formed, to which an olive grove was later added.

The Maltese Islands have secured another major international award, this time for our diving product. Scuba Diving Magazine, the official publication of PADI Diving Club in the USA and one of the most trusted global voices within the diving community, has named Malta the Best Cave/Cavern/Grotto Diving Destination in the World in its prestigious 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards.

Malta also achieved second place in both the Wreck Diving and Shore Diving categories, whilst being listed as “One of the Best” across five additional pillars, namely, Best Value, Best Overall, Best Beginner Diving, Best Advanced Diving, and Best Wall Diving. These results continue to place Malta and Gozo firmly among the top diving destinations globally.

As the destination PR representative company for the USA, Emily Hartwig from the Bradford Group received these awards on behalf of the Malta Tourism Authority during the DEMA Show in Orlando, Florida. This continues to strengthen Malta’s visibility across a market known for high-value, experience-driven travellers. With over 30 PADI Dive Centres across Malta and Gozo, this recognition further supports a sector that continues to expand in quality and international appeal.

Speaking about this achievement, MTA Chairman Dr Charles Mangion stated that:

“This award continues to showcase Malta’s commitment to quality and sustainability in our diving sector. It recognises the expertise of our dive operators, the richness of our underwater environment and the investments being made to protect it. Achievements like this strengthen Malta’s reputation among high-value travellers whilst creating lasting benefits for our local communities and economy.”

Each year, the Scuba Diving Readers’ Choice Awards capture verified feedback from passionate divers around the globe. The 2026 results will be featured throughout next year in the magazine’s print editions, digital platforms, newsletters and social channels reaching certified divers and underwater enthusiasts globally. These awards continue to provide the Maltese islands with global exposure among one of the world’s most influential diving travel audiences.
