Disco Classics Take Over Valletta This Weekend

If you’re in Malta this weekend and in the mood for something lively, this could be your evening plan sorted. The Golden Age of ABBA & Boney M. lands at the Mediterranean Conference Centre on Saturday night, bringing a full orchestral celebration of two of pop’s most recognisable names.

The concert is presented by the Gozo Youth Orchestra and the concept is simple but effective, taking the glittering hits of ABBA and Boney M and giving them the added depth and drama of a live orchestra. Expect strings, brass, rhythm section, and powerfully deep vocals all working together to bring familiar songs to life in a slightly grander way.

The team behind the production has built a reputation locally for ambitious live shows. They are the same producers responsible for Dark Side over Valletta, Queen Meets Coldplay, Not Just the Wall, From the Beatles to U2, Rock Classics of the 60’s & 70’s, Rock and Pop Classics of the 80’s & 90’s, and Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds. If you have seen any of those, you’ll know the standard is high, the musical direction is tight, and the staging is carefully thought through.

On stage, the line-up reads like a who’s who of Maltese vocal talent. Ludwig Galea, Francesco Nicodeme, Dorothy Bezzina, Amelia Kalabic, Klinsmann Coleiro and Sarah Bonnici will be joined by special guest singers Cassie Gold, Sean Kamati, Dorothy Borg Bonnici, Jessica Magro and Natassja Chapmann. Together, they’ll take on the glamour and sparkle of ABBA alongside the rhythm-heavy disco sound of Boney M, backed by the full orchestra.

For visitors, this is pure nostalgia territory. Songs such as Dancing Queen, Waterloo, Mamma Mia, Rivers of Babylon and Daddy Cool need little introduction. Hearing them reworked in a grand concert setting adds a different flavour without losing the fun.

The Mediterranean Conference Centre, set within Valletta’s historic walls, gives the evening a slightly dramatic edge. There is something super special about disco classics filling a centuries-old space. Why not pair it with a lovely dinner at the waterfront before the show?

The concert starts at 8pm this Saturday, with tickets priced between €25 and €40 depending on seating. If you’re looking for a lively night out while on the islands, this one comes with plenty of built-in singalong moments!
