Standing events to return as of September
Have you heard the news yet? Those who are fully vaccinated will be permitted to attend standing events such as concerts and parties, as of 6 September, announced health minister Chris Fearne.
Numbers will initially be restricted to 100 people – a decision that was made following discussions with the Malta Entertainment industry and Arts Association, which has long been campaigning for standing events to resume. Fearne added that more guidelines and details will be announced in the coming days.
“The government is continuing to ease restrictive measures,” he said during the press conference, announcing a new community health centre in Kalkara.
As previously announced, as of 30 August, the number of people who can attend seated events will increase from 300 to 500 people.
Schools re-opening
Chris Fearne also said that students would be able to attend school in the way they felt most confident in, whether that be virtually or in person. This rule will also be applicable to sixth forms and universities, too.
While protocols are in place to protect the health of both students and teachers, the success of the vaccination program must be reflected. A timeline for when proposals regarding the re-opening of schools will be published was not yet released but stay tuned.
Local Vaccination rates
Speaking of the vaccination drives, Malta has achieved the impressive milestone of fully vaccinating 90% of those aged 12 and up, against COVID-19. Fearne said that 792,000 vaccine doses have been administered so far, as he urged those able to be vaccinated, to do so.
90% of those who contracted the virus and were critical were not vaccinated, Fearne said. There are currently 37 people recovering from COVID-19 at Mater Dei Hospital and two of them are receiving care at the ITU.
So far, 60,ooo people have been vaccinated through the walk-in clinics and 320,000 vaccine certificates have been downloaded.
Vaccination booster shots
There’s more news. Fearne also revealed that the government is considering giving booster doses to those aged over 70. He had previously announced an additional dose of the vaccine for the immuno-compromised and those in homes for the elderly from mid-September. The health authorities are currently in the process of investigating whether to give booster doses to other groups.
