Malta Never Really Sleeps. Here’s Your Guide to 24-Hour Everything

Right, let’s have a closer look at something nobody tells you before you land in Malta: what on earth do you do if disaster strikes at 3am? Maybe your flight’s landed at some ungodly hour, maybe you’ve got a dodgy tummy after one too many pastizzi, or maybe you’ve simply run out of nappies for your little one and the shops near you close at 7pm. Fear not, Malta’s tiny, but it’s not completely dark after dark. Here’s your cheat sheet to what’s actually open round the clock.
Petrol Stations
Good news first, this one’s dead easy. Every petrol station on the island switches to self-service after the attendants clock off (roughly 6pm on weekdays, 2pm on Saturdays), and that self-service runs 24 hours a day, every day, including Sundays and public holidays. So if you’ve hired a car, you need not panic about the tank. Just pop your card in and away you go. There are also a proper handful of fully staffed 24/7 stations dotted about, places like Ghaxaq, Qormi and Msida, if you fancy a human to talk to at 2am.
Pharmacies
This is the one that trips visitors up, so pay attention. Malta doesn’t have loads of round-the-clock chemists; most run fairly ordinary hours, and there’s a Sunday duty roster where just one pharmacy per area stays open. However, there is some brilliant news for anyone travelling by car: Remedies at Campus Hub in Msida, right by Mater Dei Hospital, is Malta’s first proper 24-hour pharmacy, complete with a drive-thru window through the night on weekdays and Saturday evenings. You don’t even need to get out of the car.
If you’re stuck without wheels, your best bet for a genuine middle-of-the-night medical need is Mater Dei Hospital’s Accident & Emergency, which never closes, or the health centres in Mosta, Paola and Floriana, which also run 24/7. For anything less urgent, check pharmacy.mt for the current duty roster before you set off; every closed pharmacy is legally required to display the location of the nearest open one, so even a closed door will point you in the right direction.
Supermarkets & Convenience Shops
Spar Express, Paceville
A few years back, you’d have really struggled here, but things have really changed. Dave’s Food Stores runs several 24-hour branches (Birkirkara, San Gwann, Żurrieq, St Paul’s Bay, Gżira and St Julian’s among them), and a number of SPAR Express shops in Valletta, Sliema, Paceville, Balluta, St Julian’s, Bugibba and Mellieħa, never lock the doors either. Handy for milk, snacks, sun cream or that emergency phone charger.
Late-Night Food
Is-Serkin Crystal Palace, Rabat: an absolute institution. Freshly baked pastizzi for less than a euro, served with tea in a glass, at pavement tables that have seen generations of soldiers, students and world leaders. Round the clock, every day.
Bus Stop Lounge, Gżira: seafront, open-air, proper menu (burgers, pizza, pasta, breakfast) and open 24/7 with a sea view thrown in for free.
CFC, Qormi: Malta’s homegrown fried chicken chain, with a drive-thru that never shuts.
Talbot & Bons, Malta Airport (Luqa): tucked inside SkyParks next to the airport arrivals, open to anyone, boarding pass or not. Great shout if you’ve landed at an unsociable hour.
If all else fails, check the local food delivery apps. Download Bolt Food or Wolt and check which outlets are still delivering to your area.
Fortbewegung
Public transport thins right out overnight, Malta does run a limited network of night buses on a handful of routes, but they’re infrequent and won’t cover every corner of the island. Your safest bet after the last regular bus is a ride-hailing app, Bolt and Ecabs both operate round the clock, and Uber has a presence here too, so download whichever you prefer before you go out and you’ll always have a way home, even at 4am from Paceville.
24-Hour Gyms
24/7 Fitness Club Ta' Qali
Yes, even on a two-week holiday, you can find a treadmill at 4am. 24/7 Fitness Club has branches in Ta’ Qali, San Gwann, Mellieħa, and Żebbuġ, and a single membership gets you into all four. There’s also Club Treign in St Julian’s for something a bit more boutique, and Body Medics down in Żejtun.
Malta’s small, and between self-service petrol, a drive-thru pharmacy, a scattering of 24-hour shops and a pastizzeria that’s fed generations of night owls, you’re never quite as stuck as you might think. Bookmark this before your holiday, and if all else fails, remember Mater Dei’s A&E and the regional health centres are always, always open.
Opening hours change, so it’s always worth a quick check (pharmacy.mt is your friend) before you head out at 3am on a mission.
