Gabriel Buttiġieġ to debut striking new exhibition ‘Narratives For Postmodern Love’
In a matter of weeks, a striking new exhibition by one of Malta’s most notable young artists is hitting The Splendid in Valletta.
After returning from his most recent artistic residency overseas, Gabriel Buttiġieġ collaborated with one of the finest curators on the island, Lisa Gwen, on what is expected to be his largest solo exhibition to date. Gabriel Buttiġieġ returns with ‘Narratives for Postmodern Love’ on December 7.
This project encompasses more than merely a selection of paintings; It represents a significant portion of Gabriel’s identity and artistic vision. Each of these pieces was created with consideration of the unique space, setting, and history of Valletta’s dilapidated and barren Hotel Splendid.
Depicting the notion and view of love in the twenty-first century, Narratives for Postmodern Love is “confusing, multi-layered, complex, raw, uncertain… lonely, painful and fearsome.” Gabriel, who considers this his “boldest work yet”, aptly interprets the messiness and chaos of love. Love incites joy and pleasure, but it can also incite pain and suffering, as well as everything else in between. Sexual imagery depicting couples of all sexual orientations abounds in the artworks. They emanate passion and chaos but are almost poignant, with new figures to be discovered in between the carefully interwoven lines on the canvas.

Perhaps more than any other collection of Gabriel’s, this series is a rather intimate and vulnerable one, as he lets go of his most intensely angry feelings on surface after surface. “I have been to the brink with these new paintings, I admit…” he stated, expressing that he hopes to connect with all those who see them. His feelings are revealed as the stories progress, which undoubtedly anyone can recognise themselves in.
Following the launch on December 7 at 7 pm, Narratives for Postmodern Love will stay open at The Splendid until December 22. Visitors can attend between 3 pm and 8 pm from Monday to Friday, and from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday. This project enjoys the support of The Splendid, Andre Gialanze Photography, DV Trading, Gemelli Framing and Funderija Artistika Chetcuti.
