This December, Malta Photographic Society (MPS) is organising the 58th National Competition and Exhibition of Photography. Held at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta, this historical edition is unexpectedly high in quantity of participants and entrants, and equally as high in photographic quality.
The competition is split into four categories; 188 Monochrome Prints, 214 Colour Prints, 232 Monochrome Projected Images, and 277 Colour Projected Images. The Malta Photographic Society received over 900 submissions, from which 107 prints and 150 electronically projected photos were chosen. The wide range of entries in all four categories is a testament to the lively imagination and enthusiasm of our local photographers.Â
The Malta Photographic Society executive committee has expressed its happiness at the tremendous response from MPS members and non-members alike, who all made sure to submit their best work for the contest. The chance to display in the prestigious Palazzo de La Salle has stoked excitement and is a momentous occasion for the MPS and its funders.
The competition’s results were made public in October, where credit was given to both the outstanding calibre of the entries and the event’s diligent planners. The submitted photos evidence the all-encompassing talents to be found in the Malta Photographic Society, ranging from the artistic and expressive to the classic.

In addition to, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, Honourable Mentions were given to excellent contributions that did not place among the top three. These medals and awards were given out in all four categories. Moreover, special prizes were given out for the best works in Portrait, Landscape, Still Life, Nature, Architecture, and Street Photography.
The necessity for exhibition spaces for local photographers is one that The Malta Photographic Society recognises, and thus they are committed to elevating photography to the same level as other artistic forms. Those interested can visit the 58th National Competition & Exhibition of Photography at Palazzo de La Salle from this Friday, December 1, until December 21.Â
The exhibition will be open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 7 pm, and Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm. Entrance is entirely free, and those who would like a guide can reach the Malta Photographic Society by phone at 99001961 or via email at admin@mpsmalta.com.
