Bethlehem in Għajnsielem back for its 14th Edition
We’ve all seen or at least heard of live nativity scenes. As a matter of fact, this year marks 800 years since the first live nativity scene was made in Grecio! However, this Gozo attraction takes it a step further!
Since its inaugural edition in 2008, thousands of visitors have been fascinated by Bethlehem in Għajnsielem. Situated on the island of Gozo, next to the main plaza of Għajnsielem, the nativity village is only a 5-minute walk from Mġarr Harbour. This life-size crib, aptly named ‘Bethlehem in Għajnsielem,’ is built over 20,000 square metres of fields on a section of land known as Ta’ Passi. On December 13, approximately 150 actors will transport visitors 2000 years into the past for the 14th edition!
The Bethlehem landscape of two millennia ago will be realistically replicated. To immerse guests into the experience, everyone is provided with a map upon arrival. The Bakery is the first destination, since Bethlehem means ‘House of Bread’. After that, you’ll see a few traditional tradespeople, like blacksmiths, carpenters, and fishermen. Entire families occupy each home, serving as a constant reminder to everyone that Christmas is a time for just that – family. Enjoy a distinctive setting in the picnic area while the Tavern serves regional cuisine and wine.
Moreover, make sure to cross the Wooden Rope Bridge so you can observe shepherds in the nearby pastures. In addition, you may visit the outdoor market that sells fresh produce and fruits from the area or take a “Maltese Boat” across the river. Antique agricultural hand tools and many local artisan sections can also be found. Several reenactments and live events will also be happening throughout the animated hours in the Roman Arena, in addition to a Roman Garrison patrolling the streets of Bethlehem, collecting taxes, and conducting the census as ordered by the Emperor, Senate, and people of Rome.
Families can enjoy the distinctive settings of the Maltese countryside or eat some local cuisine, while children can learn about Maltese folklore through book reading sessions. The highlight and final stop is the Grotto, where a certain poor unknown couple is caring for their newborn Baby Jesus while a cow and a donkey are nearby.
Bethlehem in Għajnsielem opens on December 16 and closes on January 7, 2024. The specific dates, as well as opening and closing time, can be found here.
