Latest Exhibition by Darren Tanti ‘Apotheosis’ tackles glorification of humans
Darren Tanti, a local artist well-known for his technically brilliant and conceptually rich paintings, is sending the art world into the new year with his newest exhibition ‘Apotheosis’.
The term “apotheosis” refers to the divinization of a human being, a concept that can be applied to both religious figures like Jesus, but the modern idolisation of public figures like politicians, athletes, and even artists. In order to address the current status of humanity, Tanti produces an unusual collection that blends traditional religious art with pop elements.
His body of work includes both more experimental and unconventional art forms as well as hyperrealistic and figurative pieces. Tanti has taken part in a number of prestigious international art exhibits, such as ‘Time, Space, Existence’ at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2014, and ‘HomoMelitensis’ as one of the artists who participated in the 2017 Venice Biennale of Art on behalf of Malta. He has also featured in every edition of the APS Mdina Cathedral Contemporary Art Biennale. Today, lectures at MCAST Institute for the Creative Arts and the University of Malta.
This exhibition demonstrates a new direction for Tanti’s work. Known for his hyperrealist paintings, Tanti expands on his previous sculpted work, ‘Inaction is a Weapon of Mass Destruction’ (2022), to further move past the 2D painting. The majority of the artworks on display here are sculptures and objects d’art, which combine unconventional elements like neon tubes and perspex to create what can be seen as separate installations that all work together to form a cohesive exhibition.
Organised by the Valletta Cultural Agency, Apotheosis will remain open at The Oratory at the Jesuits’ Church until January 9. Visitors can enter every day free of charge from 9 am to 4 pm, save for December 24 and December 31, when it’ll be open from 9 am to 1 pm.
