The Glasshouse Project comes to an end with final exhibition
Last July, an artist trio made up of Robert Zahra, Jesmond Vassallo and Gilbert Calleja, embarked on a year-long endeavour entitled ‘The Glasshouse Project’, along with curator Caldon Mercieca.
The project launched with an exhibition called ‘Seedlings’, which was held at the Art Galleries of The Malta Society of Arts, and reflected 20 years of collaboration between the four artists. Following ‘Seedlings’, The Glasshouse Project started a run of events including workshops, open studios, public talks, meet-the-artist gatherings, publications, and additional exhibitions held at different venues around Malta and in association with other visual art institutions.
Now in the third phase of The Glasshouse Project, Calleja, Vassallo, and Zahra are set to produce an exhibition of 2D and 3D works. The project investigates creation as a continuous organic process—”germination, growth, reproduction, and decay”—by drawing metaphorical comparisons between glasshouses and artists’ workspaces. The exhibition examines how artworks are consumed and change from conception to circulation using a variety of media, creative presentation strategies, and image-making techniques.
The exhibition deals with subjects of “interior spaces, the human figure, and the relationships between architecture, objects, and natural elements”. This investigation is consistent with the idea of art as a transforming process in a location (a site, a lab, a glasshouse) where the person experiences a reciprocal transformation.
The Glasshouse Project will open on January 19 and run until February 25, 2024. The opening hours are 9 am or 10 am (depending on the date) to 9 pm, and entrance is free.
