New Sicily-Malta Ferry service to launch this spring
Ragusa Xpress, a new Maltese-owned fast ferry service, launches this spring. The boat will take passengers from Valletta to the Marina di Ragusa (and vice versa) in under two hours.
The catamaran was actually built in 2001 and was dubbed HSC San Giorgio, after the patron saint of Ragusa Ibla. After a consortium of Maltese acquired ownership of the marina and the port area, the catamaran was renamed Ragusa Xpress underwent a two-year overhaul at MHH in Marsa, and quite recently, was thoroughly tested on water.
Currently, Virtu Ferries is the only operational company offering a catamaran service to Sicily, and the introduction of Ragusa Xpress could very well affect ferry ticket prices. Officials company representatives affirmed that Ragusa Xpress ferry tickets will be very affordable.
The catamaran, measuring at 51 metres, will be able to accommodate up to 400 passengers and 20 cars or 60 motorbikes. The refurbished interior looks completely different and modernised, with two floors offering bars and other facilities. The journey is expected to take approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, and the prices will reportedly be among the most affordable for boat rides to Sicily.
Along with affordable rental options, Ragusa Xpress customers can also benefit from free parking in a safe area in the Porto di Ragusa. Complete with 23 outlets, including restaurants, stores, and other amenities, the Porto di Ragusa has a boat yard, plenty of secure parking.
