A Night of Jazz at Strada Stretta with The Carlos Muscat Quarter
Next month, the Valletta Cultural Agency is kicking off their STRADA STRETTA campaign for the year 2024 with yet another thrilling jazz event called ‘Tribute to the Roots’.
The STRADA STRETTA campaign is a project founded with the aim of revitalising Valletta’s iconic Strait Street. Back in the 19th-20th century, Strait Street was the number one nightclub hotspot. It was a bit of a melting pot due to the presence of British and American soldiers on the island. The street was also well-known for its vibrant live music scene, particularly jazz. Tribute to the Roots will see The Carlo Muscat Paris Quarter bring back that same atmosphere and deliver a chaotic jazz performance. This inaugural event will take place on Saturday, February 24, at Silver Horse in Valletta.
With Carlo Muscat on saxophone, Simon Martineau on guitar, Mauro Gargano on bass, and Stefano Lucchini on drums, the quartet will be playing some timeless tunes from the 20th-century and paying homage to some of the giants of jazz. The performance will feature songs by the likes of Joe Henderson, Oliver Nelson, John Coltrane, Horace Silver, and Wayne Shorter, and other Black-American jazz musicians who developed the genre, making for an authentic Tribute to the Roots.
Carlo Muscat began his musical career at an early age here in Malta. As his popularity grew, he relocated to Paris in 2013 and became fully involved in the lively local music scene. There, Carlo worked with and listened to musicians from a variety of backgrounds, absorbing different sounds and honing his craft in the process. Eventually, Muscat grew to perform in European cities like Paris, London, Istanbul, Milan, Berlin, Kyiv, and Rotterdam.
Having released six albums as a leader and five more as a sideman, he describes his musical journey as an unending, expressive process that thrives on improvisation and the flexibility of interpretation. As a singer, composer, and devoted private instructor, Carlo is most active in Malta, Paris, and Kiev. He also holds the esteemed position of director of ‘Storeroom,’ one of the island’s best live music venues. Furthermore, Muscat’s music is a testament to his devotion to his craft, always trying to top himself with each release and performance.
Notably, the members of the Carlos Muscat Quartet are a mixture of Maltese and French musicians, keeping that sense of cultural integration once present in Strait Street alive. If you enjoy their performance and would love to see more of them, you might be able to catch them at the 2024 Malta Jazz Festival coming this July! Plus, the STRADA STRETTA campaign has many more live music events in store for the year!
For now, Tribute to the Roots begins at 7.45 pm. Entrance is free. See you there!
