‘Għajn Xtutna’: A Modern Dance Tribute to Malta’s Historic Watchtowers

Next week, the award-winning Moveo Dance Company is bringing an exciting new performance to the Valletta Campus Theatre. On February 3 and 3, experience a fusion of Urban/Hip Hop and contemporary dance at ‘Għajn Xtutna’.

‘Għajn Xtutna’, or ‘Eyes of our Shores’ in English, is being produced in collaboration with Cheryl Lofreda, the founder of Concept of Movement Dance Studio, or MVMT. Joining her in putting together the choreography are Charlotte Carpienter and Gabrielle Farinacci. This production comes from the minds of director-choreographer Diane Portelli, and Artistic Director Dorian Mallia.

Before coming up with ‘Għajn Xtutna’, the two set out to create a Malta-themed dance. When trying to think of things that are quintessentially Maltese, they thought of the sun and the sea. That is how they landed on the idea of watchtowers, them being the figurative “eyes of our shores”.

Travel through time as moveo’s dancers honour Malta’s ancient watchtowers, which acted as watchful strongholds, providing manned nightly observation to ward off coastal threats. Experience a visually spectacular performance that takes the concept of watchtowers and updates them for the 21st century will captivate your senses. Embark on an emotional rollercoaster of terror, tenacity, and communal defence as they examine the contemporary dangers to the Maltese islands.

This blending of genres and styles makes for a dance performance that explores our weaknesses and looks for creative solutions to the problems of the modern world. Don’t miss out on this amazing show where artistry meets history. ‘Għajn Xtutna’ is supported by Arts Council Malta. Performances will be held on February 3 and 4, both starting at 7.30 pm and concluding at 10.30 pm.
