Watch the story behind the Feast of St Paul’s Shipwreck on the big screen

This Saturday, February 10, marks the Feast of St Paul’s Shipwreck. The events that transpired on this day changed the religious course of the island, and for that reason, they are still commemorated and celebrated to this day. In late 2014, a short docudrama called ‘The Shipwreck’ was released chronicling the story of Saint Paul the Apostle’s experience in Malta.

The film recounts the events of the Apostle’s final journey to Rome in 60 AD, when he was sentenced to death as a martyr for his Christian conversion. He was entitled to stand before Caesar and have his case heard in Rome, since he was a Roman citizen. ‘The Shipwreck’ gives an account of the hardships Saint Paul experienced before landing in Malta, and how this affected the island’s history. It also depicts locations from today that are connected to the shipwreck and the apostle’s three-month stay on the islands.

This 35-minute documentary is shown every hour at ĊAQ in Ta’ Paris, Birkirkara. It is presented with several projectors on a 13-metre screen (120° viewing), making for a more immersive experience. The goal is to engross the audience in the narrative so they become an active participant rather than just a passive observer, thereby simulating the experiences that Saint Paul had on his journey to Malta.

The show is available in 6 different languages: Maltese, English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish.  It is available for viewing every hour between 10 am and 2 pm on Saturdays, priced at €7.50 for adults and €5 for kids. Between its action, excitement, and amazing effects, ‘The Shipwreck’ appeals to the whole family.

So, immerse yourself in Maltese culture and get to know the story behind one of the island’s major holidays, this St Paul’s feast.
