Maltese Carnival Icon Paul Curmi to be Honoured with Carnival Float
The late Maltese carnival icon Paul Curmi, known as Pawlu l-Pampalun, will be honoured as a featured carnival float this weekend. Curmi, who passed away at the age of 93 in November 2023, left a mark on Malta’s carnival scene through his creativity, humour, and passion for preserving carnival festivities.
Curmi’s lifelong dedication to the spirit of carnival began at a young age, with him performing on drums at the age of seven. He immersed himself in the carnival world, eventually even forming his own dance company.
The carnival float dedicated to him is poised to celebrate his colourful life and enduring contributions to Maltese culture. It will likely showcase vibrant depictions of his most iconic costumes and characters, serving as a fitting tribute to his legacy.
Despite his passing, Pawlu l-Pampalun’s spirit will undoubtedly animate the carnival celebrations, as his memory lives on in the hearts of those who admired his work. His absence will be deeply felt, but his presence will be celebrated with fondness as the carnival festivities will pay homage to his remarkable contributions. Through this float, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift carnival enthusiasts for years to come, ensuring that his legacy remains an integral part of Malta’s cultural tapestry. He is the King of Carnival, after all.
