Malta's Iron Taekwondo League Makes History in France

ITL’s outstanding performance in the Lot et Garonne Challenge Cup sets a new standard with 10 medals won

ITL’s recent participation in France’s Lot et Garonne Challenge Cup resulted in an impressive achievement, with the team securing a remarkable haul of five gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. This tournament marked ITL’s second tournament of the year, following the Open de Liege in February. Notably, the team comprised 12 athletes aged six to 12, with eight making their international debut.

A standout performer was Gianluca Barbara, the 13th athlete, who competed in the Masters -80 kg category and clinched his third consecutive international gold without conceding a single shot. Individual performances showcased exceptional talent within the team.

Kieran Vella, earning gold, effortlessly advanced through his semi-final with a ‘point gap’ victory before narrowly defeating teammate Tyas Mifsud Calleja in a thrilling final bout. Similarly, Ella Schembri showcased her dominance by winning all three fights with ease, securing gold in the final.

Dwayne Micallef, a European kids champion, secured gold in the -24 kg category, storming through all three of his fights with considerable margins. Emma Lautier, a European kids vice-champion, displayed remarkable skill by securing gold in the females -26 kg category, fighting in a higher weight class due to the absence of opponents in her usual group.

Gianluca Barbara’s gold added to the club’s success, with impressive wins against French opponents. His achievement marked a historic milestone, as no other Maltese athlete has secured first place in three successive international competitions.

Luca Falzon, a newcomer, secured silver in his debut, displaying remarkable skill despite his short time in taekwondo. Tyas Mifsud Calleja, at just six years old, became ITL’s youngest medalist, demonstrating exceptional fighting spirit despite facing his teammate in the final.

Other notable performances include Eva Mifsud Calleja and Merobika Abdela, who both secured bronze medals in their respective categories. Dailen Barbara narrowly missed out on a spot in the final but secured the team’s final bronze medal.

Despite some close defeats, athletes like Firayaad Abdela, Zach Zammit, and Oliver Gatt gained valuable experience in their international debuts. Their dedication contributed to the club’s record-breaking haul of 10 total medals.

MTA President Anna Vassallo, present at the event, received recognition for her efforts in international taekwondo. She also welcomed the host team, Taekwondo club Villeneuvois (Lovent), to Malta for a training camp in June 2021.

Overall, ITL’s performance in the Lot et Garonne Challenge Cup showcased exceptional talent and dedication, setting a high standard for future competitions.
