Malta Recognised as 4th Most Favourable Destination for Innovative Startups

Malta ranks 4th in EU for startups, excelling in talent attraction and digital tools, with room for growth in finance access.

According to a recent survey conducted by the Europe Startup Nations Alliance (ESNA) across 21 EU countries, Malta has been recognised as the 4th most favourable destination for innovative startups.

This marks a significant achievement for Malta, as it places alongside larger countries like Spain, France, and Belgium in terms of fostering a conducive environment for startup growth.

Malta Enterprise, representing Malta in ESNA, has been instrumental in this analysis.

Malta has outperformed in several key areas, earning commendable scores in the ‘Startup Nations standards’, which encompass eight benchmarks of excellence in startup support.

Notably, Malta achieved a remarkable 100% score, surpassing all other countries, in three specific domains: the attraction and retention of new talent, the utilisation of digital tools for communication between startups and governmental bodies, and the efficiency in company registration processes.

While Malta has demonstrated strengths in fostering innovation and facilitating startup operations, there remain areas for improvement, particularly in enhancing access to finance and employee share options.

To address these challenges, Malta Enterprise is actively developing a Startup Framework aimed at enhancing legislative support for startups and investors.

Initiatives such as BStart and Startup Finance, offering assistance of up to €1.5 million, are part of this ongoing effort.

The Maltese government has announced the establishment of a €10 million Venture Capital Fund to provide additional financial support to innovative startups.

Efforts to streamline collaboration between government and private entities through initiatives like ‘StartinMalta’ underscore Malta’s commitment to fostering a vibrant startup ecosystem.
