Maltese Ftira Workshop For Kids This June

This engaging ftira workshop is set to take place on Tuesday 11 June between 15:00 to 16:30 at the Inquisitor’s Palace in Birgu, and is designed for culinary enthusiasts aged 8 and over, offering a unique opportunity to delve into the art, culture, and history behind one of Malta’s beloved staples.

Participants will have the chance to create one of the tastiest and most popular local snacks—the traditional Maltese ftira—while exploring its intriguing history in the immersive ambiance of the Inquisitor’s Palace.

Guided by experienced instructors, participants will learn the techniques required to craft the perfect ftira, beginning with the dough that forms the base of this iconic dish. The workshop includes a demonstration followed by a hands-on session where participants will prepare their own ftira, featuring various traditional fillings such as kunserva (tomato paste), bigilla (broad bean paste), and other classic accompaniments.

Additionally, through a science experiment, participants will discover how yeast, an essential ingredient for ftira, works.

This activity provides a unique opportunity to learn about Maltese culinary traditions and to engage with the culture behind the cuisine. While mixing, kneading, and seasoning, participants will gain insights into the flavours that have delighted Maltese palates for generations.
