First Turtle Nest of the Year Spotted at Golden Bay Over The Weekend!
We have some exciting news for nature lovers visiting our beautiful islands! Over the weekend, Nature Trust Malta (NTM-FEE) volunteers discovered the first turtle nesting site of the year at Ir-Ramla tal-Mixquqa, better known as Golden Bay. The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) confirmed this incredible find, marking a significant moment for Malta’s marine life conservation efforts.
The Significance of the Loggerhead Turtle Nest
The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is an endangered species protected under various national and international laws. These magnificent creatures are known for their long life span and slow maturation. They typically inhabit tropical to warm temperate waters. The sighting of a turtle nest is a rare and precious event and highlights the importance of conservation efforts on our islands.
ERA and Nature Trust Malta are now monitoring the nesting site at Golden Bay, with efforts to ensure its safety and protection. Volunteers have cordoned off the area to prevent any disturbance threatening the eggs or future hatchlings.
How You Can Help Protect the Nest
If you find yourself at Golden Bay or any other beach in Malta and you come across a turtle nest, here are some important precautions to take:
- Keep Your Distance: Maintain a safe distance from the nest to avoid disturbing the eggs. Turtle eggs are incredibly fragile, and even minor disturbances can be harmful.
- Minimise Noise: Excessive noise can stress the nesting turtles and the hatchlings. Enjoy the beach quietly, and encourage others to do the same.
- Avoid Lights: Bright lights can disorient turtles, especially hatchlings, which navigate by natural light to find their way to the sea. Avoid using flashlights, camera flashes, or other bright lights near the nesting site.
- Respect the Boundaries: Do not cross the barriers if the area is cordoned off. These measures are in place to protect the nest and ensure the eggs have the best chance of hatching successfully.
- Report Sightings: If you observe any turtle activity, such as a turtle laying eggs or hatchlings emerging, report it immediately. Contact ERA at 2292 3500 or Nature Trust Malta at 2131 3150. Your report could be crucial for the protection of these endangered creatures.
