Exploring Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, Malta

Situated between Madliena, Għargħur, and Pembroke lies the bright village of Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq. This charming region is located at the entrance to Wied il-Kbir, the longest valley on the island. The Maltese name for Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq translates to “sea of pebbles,” a description that accurately captures the region’s coastline landscape of long, rocky shoreline dotted with numerous pebbles. Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, home to a cozy population of 1,250 people, is a distinctive place with a combination of historical interest and scenic beauty.
The village’s unusual name comes from its pebbly shoreline, which was a prominent camping area for British soldiers in Malta’s colonial era. Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq still has two-hundred-year-old churches, one of which is abandoned.
A well-liked attraction with a dolphin show is the marine entertainment centre, which is located just across from the village. To the village’s offerings—which also include a limited number of eateries, taverns, and a Boy Scout camping area. A major structure that has subsequently fallen into ruin is the White Rocks tourism complex, which was located in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq in the late 20th century.

Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq was incorporated into the Local Council of Naxxar, despite its parish area being under the jurisdiction of Għargħur, a neighbouring town. Many Maltese nationals have invested in and developed properties in the region throughout the past 15 years, contributing to a significant growth in land development.
Another significant historical building in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq is the Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq Redoubt (Ridott ta’ Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq). This redoubt, which was constructed by the Order of Saint John in 1715, is a component of the Maltese Islands’ coastal defence system. A redoubt is a defensive fortress built to guard important locations. The redoubt is still standing today and provides insight into Malta’s lengthy military past. The area’s historical significance is further highlighted by the neighbouring Qalet Marku Battery, which has since been dismantled, and Madliena Tower, which was previously connected by an entrenchment. The redoubt is made up of a central rectangular blockhouse that is separated into two rooms, a low parapet, and a pentagonal platform with short sides.
Beyond its historical charm, the breathtaking shoreline of Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq is a source of pride. There are several lovely beaches in the hamlet, each providing a distinctive experience. One of the golden beaches has also been given a Blue Flag, an award given to beaches that observe
sustainable operations, as well as excellent water quality. There is something for everyone when it comes to the variety of water sports available to visitors, ranging from windsurfing (if you’re lucky) to snorkelling.
