Celebrating the Feast of Santa Marija in Comino This Saturday
If you are visiting the islands this week, you’re in for a really special treat. The pretty neighbouring island of Comino will host the traditional feast of Santa Marija on Saturday, 24 August.
A Blessing of the Seas
One of the highlights of the Santa Marija feast is the blessing of the sea. Gozo Bishop Anton Teuma will make his way across the tranquil waters in a dinghy to bless all the marine vessels in the area. So, if you’re sailing around Comino that day, make sure to be at San Nikola Bay at 4:30 pm or Santa Marija Bay at 5:15 pm to receive a special blessing and a commemorative memento. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or just out for a day on the water, this is a tradition you won’t want to miss.
A Solemn Mass by the Sea
Mgr Teuma will celebrate a solemn Mass in front of the historic St Mary’s chapel at 6:45 p.m. This is a cherished event, especially for Maltese and Gozitans who are sailing or visiting the island during the summer. The peaceful setting, coupled with the spiritual ambience, makes it a truly memorable experience. Remember to stay hydrated, seating will also be provided.

Mgr Joseph Attard, the rector of the chapel, warmly invites everyone to join what he calls Komunita, Ħbieb tal-Baħar fil-Mulej ‒ Kemmuna (Friends of the Sea in Jesus Christ community ‒ Comino). This year’s celebration is extra special, as the Naxxar Scout Group Band will be participating for the first time. For those on the nearby island of Gozo, a charter boat will depart at 5:30 pm to bring you to the event. To secure your spot, make sure to book ahead by calling 99847099.
A Chapel Steeped in History
The Comino chapel, dedicated to St. Mary, has an impressive history that dates back centuries. The first mention of a chapel on Comino appears on a map from 1296, though the exact location of that original building remains a mystery.
The current chapel is believed to stand on the site of its medieval predecessor, which was frequently attacked by pirates. This lead to the island’s inhabitants to flee to Gozo. In 1948, Captain Charles Vassallo donated a statue of St. Mary, crafted by renowned sculptor Wistin Camilleri, which was beautifully restored in 2016.
